High Fiber Intake Might Ease Symptoms Of Asthma

Okay, so these tests were on mice, but research appearing in the journal Nature Medicine found that a high fiber diet might be able to cut inflammation in the lungs, possibly easing asthma symptoms. Imagine fruits, veggies and whole grains prescribed for asthma... seems far-fetched, but there may be something to upping your fiber intake and easing these symptoms. Bear in mind that we've moved toward processed foods (and away from a naturally high fiber diet) being a larger and larger portion of
the diet in recent years - during that time there's been a documented increase in allergic asthma in developed nations.
Today asthma is part of the lives of over 25 million (7 million children) Americans.
The research team from Switzerland's University of Lausanne found that the high and low fiber diets changed the types of bacteria living in the digestive systems of the subject mice. The extra fiber given to the mice changed the nutrients absorbed in the gut, and this changed the
immune system. Bacteria that can digest soluble fiber flourished on a high fiber diet - producing more short chain fatty acids that were absorbed into the blood. The fatty acids were signals to the immune system and the lungs appeared more resistant to irritation.
For the low fiber diets the mice became more vulnerable to asthma.
Experts think there's a high probability that this effect would be seen in people as the basic principles of fiber changing to short chain fatty acids is
already well known. What we don't know is that amount of fiber you'd need to take in. The same team at Lausanne are looking into the role of diet in other long term lung inflammations like COPD, set to be named the world's number three biggest killer.

One other implication of the study is to give the purified fatty acids as a supplement. And while this worked in mice, there still is a need for a lot more work before anyone will do this in people. It's early yet, but the findings are promising... and if they get you to up your fiber intake a bit... what's the harm?
For those who don't know, asthma affects people of all ages, most often starting in childhood. The condition causes airways to be more sensitive to irritation, more apt to get inflamed and this leads to a narrowing and the feeling of it being harder to breathe. Those with asthma may have recurring times of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing that happens early in the morning or at night.
